Don Quixote of Literacy

Updated: Apr 3, 2018

Ridwan Sururi is a literacy hero who initiated a mobile library with a horse. Sururi is a horse caretaker living in Serang Village in Purbalingga, Central Java, Indonesia. He started the mobile library called Kudapustaka - meaning "horse library” in Indonesia with donated books from his fellow horse enthusiast Nirwan Arsuka and other donors in January 2015. Every week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday he visits nearby schools and villages to offer books for the children and the villagers.

His pure dedication to promoting literacy has made others call him “the Don Quixote of literacy”. Photographer, Putu Sayoga, spent time following him in 2015.

“When the children see him, they have been waiting,” Mr. Sayoga said. “They run over to meet him and have to make a queue since there are so may of them. It’s a really nice thing.”

Mr. Sururi plans to take the next logical step on his quixotic path.

“He wants to build a library at his house so the kids won’t have to wait,” Mr. Sayoga said. “That way, they can come and get books.”
